Nizwa and Jebel Akhdar from Muscat: plan a mountain day trip

A day from Muscat to Nizwa and Jebel Akhdar brings together an old inland city and the cooler heights of Oman’s Hajar Mountains. The route covers a lot of ground, so treat it as a full-day excursion and choose a few worthwhile stops rather than trying to see every fort, village and viewpoint at once.

Opening times, mountain access rules, road conditions and tour inclusions can change. Check the official visitor information and confirm the vehicle, stops, pickup and final terms for your date.

Place notes

Begin with Nizwa Fort and the souq

Nizwa Fort is the city’s best-known landmark: its large circular tower stands beside the traditional souq, making the two easy to plan together on foot. The official visitor listing describes the fort’s history and publishes current opening information, but hours and access arrangements can change; check them before leaving Muscat. Allow time to browse the souq and pause for lunch. If the Friday livestock market is part of your plan, confirm its timing and location locally rather than assuming it operates like the daily market.

Small discoveries

Take the mountain road in a suitable vehicle

Jebel Akhdar means “Green Mountain” and is known for its high plateau, terraced villages and cultivated gardens. The ascent is a different kind of outing from Nizwa’s town centre. Experience Oman’s hiking guide notes a police checkpoint on the way up, where the vehicle’s suitability is checked. Confirm the current access rule and vehicle arrangement with your operator before travel; do not assume an ordinary rental car will be accepted. If you plan a walk, choose a route that matches your fitness and leave time to return before dark.
